Choosing Joy
written by
Henri Nouwen
I am convinced we can choose joy. Every moment we decide to respond to an event or a person with joy instead of sadness. When we truly believe that God is life and only life, then nothing need have the power to draw us into the sad realm of death. To choose joy does not mean to choose happy feelings or an artificial feeling of hilarity. But it does mean the determination to let whatever takes place bring us one step closer to the God of life.
Maybe this is what is so important about quiet moments of meditation and prayer. They allow me to take a critical look at my moods and to move from victimization to free choice.

Remembering the Dead: Henri Nouwen |
To remember my mother does not mean telling her story over and over again to my friends, nor does it mean pictures on the wall or a stone on her grave; it does not even mean constantly thinking about her. No. It means making her a participant in God’s ongoing work of redemption by allowing her to dispel in me a little more of my darkness and lead me a little closer to the light. In these weeks of mourning she died in me more and more every day, making it impossible for me to cling to her as my mother. Yet by letting her go I did not lose her. Rather, I found that she is closer to me than ever. In and through the Spirit of Christ, she indeed is becoming a part of my very being. |

To paraphrase a famous saying, 'what does it profit anyone, if they gain the whole world but lose their soul?' Money might not be the root of all evil, but it certainly isn't the be-all and end-all of happiness ... although admittedly, that's a lot easier to say when you have enough of the stuff. Yet, no matter what you think you need, money isn't going to be the answer today. If you set out with the intention of demonstrating love, friendship and trust, you'll find those qualities are reciprocated. And that will bring satisfaction that money can't buy.
John Ross, at 85 years young
Had the pleasure taking a retired Australian Army Helicopter pilot for a flight recently.
John Ross first flew solo in the Bell 47 (G2) with the Australian Army in 1961. After a posting to Fort Rucker with the US Army to train as an instructor, John returned as the Senior Flying Instructor-Rotary Wing for Army’s 16 ALA Sqn prior to joining the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in Melbourne in 1966 as the first rotary wing examiner of airmen and airways surveyor in Australia.
After investigating a fatal offshore helicopter accident in Bass Strait 1969, John left DCA and spent his career advising aviation operations supporting the offshore oil and gas industry.
John hasn’t flown a Bell 47 in 50 years but I tell you , he flew my Bell 47 “ Larry the Mighty Bell 47” as if he had flown one just yesterday. Not bad for 85 years young.
John is the father of PAC member Cameron Ross, who also flew helicopters in the Australian Army (’87 – ’95).
